10 Ways To Reduce Waste At Home
10 Home Waste Reduction Techniques
To collaboratively reduce garbage in Western Australia, we must first reduce the amount of waste we produce.
Here are 10 easy steps you can take to cut down on home waste:
Buy less
Naturally, if you buy less, you will throw away less. Reduce your grocery spending to start. The likelihood is that you will then throw away less packaging AND less spoiled food.
Apply it even more broadly to your purchases of clothing and technology. Make sure to pause and consider whether you actually need it; if the answer is "no," leave it at the register.
Look for solutions with little or no packaging.
Start basing your shopping choices on the amount of packing an item has and start looking for fruit, veggies, and other food items that can be purchased loose. Purchase some reusable produce bags, or just put everything in your basket or shopping cart.
Bulk purchases
Buying in bulk and at farmers markets are excellent methods to reduce packaging (and frequently save money too!).
Bulk purchasing is not limited to food items. By purchasing garden materials like mulch and soil by the trailer load, consumers can avoid spending more on smaller, pre-packaged bags from supermarkets and garden centers.
Stay away from disposable or single-use things.
Refuse single-use household goods like wet wipes and disposable razor blades. Instead, whenever possible, purchase reusable things.
Purchase durable products.
Cheap toys, clothes, and electronics frequently don't hold up over time. If you can, avoid this by making long-lasting purchases that will cut down on waste and ultimately save you time and money.
Buy no bottled water.
You do not require it. Tap water in a high-quality reusable container is significantly better for the environment and your wallet. If you consume a lot of sparkling water, think about investing in a home carbonator.
Reusable bags
Use reusable bags for all of your purchases, not just grocery store purchases. Keep them in your handbag and car.
Make lunchboxes without packaging.
Use a nice, robust lunchbox with distinct compartments to reduce the need for plastic wrap and packaging. To keep sandwiches fresh, use reusable wraps made of beeswax. To reduce costs and plastic waste, decant yogurt into a smaller, reusable container.
Stop using a plastic toothbrush.
Change to a biodegradable bamboo toothbrush instead; they are becoming more widely available and will help prevent your toothbrushes from ending up in a landfill where they will remain for an additional 400+ years.
Reject unsolicited mail
The amount of paper your household discards each year will be significantly reduced by this straightforward change. Additionally, it will send a message to retailers if enough of us do it. Once you've done that, you might want to think about unsubscribing from all of those sales emails as well so you won't be tempted to buy things every time you open your inbox!
